Mozart’s 40th symphony is one of the greatest symphonies in the classical era. It is very balanced work, every question has an answer, either it satisfies the questioner or not. Every phrase has its symmetric component. It is written in the sonatta form which is composed of exposition, development and recapitulation parts...
In the exposition part we have been introduced to first and second worlds and there is a repetition of them. Then in the development part, there is a fantasized first world and fantasized second world which is the developed version of both. Finally, we have recapitulation part that leads us to a final. Violins are the most dominant instruments, they play the main melody. Flutes accompany them and create a thicker harmony.
The first theme we heard has happiness and joy. It gives the impression that some answers have been seeking and the answers that are given is not please the questioner. Second theme has a more sorrow in it than the first world. There is a sudden relaxation that we’ve become suspicious about asking that if we’ve found the answer. However, there is still tension in the theme.
When the first world begin to be played again, we have the tendency to interpret it differently although it is the same as it is in the beginning. Since we try to understand the two worlds Mozart expresses, the meaning of it changes even if we’ve heard it only twice. The repetition is necessary for us to digest the themes and appreciate them.
In the development part, we’ve heard a beginning of the first theme, we set our expectations and suddenly it surprises us. If we divide our basic melody into two parts, question and answer, in the development part, we have different answer to same question, since each answer phrase is altered chromatically. This unexpected change make us more curious.
Recapitulation ends with G minor, which the tonality of first world, that give us the thought that first world wins, if there is a competition.
In the certain parts of the movement, certain phrases is being repeated, increases the tension and demanding the answers repeatedly and furiously. In those parts we have a certain feeling that the matter couldn’t been solved, the matter repeats itself in order to get the answer, however there is no answer or maybe the answer is rejected. Maybe the main melody is an answer, and it keeps coming out of the woodwork but the piece is not satisfied with it, answer is rejected and in the end, the first world emphasized its answer and within a sudden change, we have a certain answer with no doubt and we are sure that the first world has the right answer.
